What progress has been made with non-electronic computers?

I heard that someone was developing computers that use only optical components (eg optical fibres) rather than electronic ones, as in theory it would be able to process data much more quickly.

Any news on this?

heard of it but don't know.
The real use of fiber optic technology on computers I know of is through networking, specially with broadband internet. The old ones people use are copper wires, but optic fibres can transfer data a lot more faster than copper.
